Testing and Safety
Enhancing Safety. Creating a Difference.
Safety is of paramount importance when it comes to blood transfusion. At Jeevan, we always strive to maintain stringent safety standards and provide blood components that have been collected and tested using the latest technologies.
At Jeevan we realise the importance of providing "on demand" safe blood to patients in a timely hassle free manner.
Safe blood means...
-
blood which will not transmit disease
-
blood which will not cause any adverse reactions
-
blood which will serve the purpose for which it is transfused
Our quality programme minimises disease transmission by
-
collecting blood donations from only healthy, volunteers .
-
subjecting all prospective donors to a thorough pre-donation evaluation.
-
testing all donor blood for various infectious disease markers - HBsAg, Anti HBc-total, Anti HCV, HIV 1 & 2 antibody, Malaria, ALT, Leptospira and Syphilis.
-
adhering to good manufacturing practice.(GMP)
Our quality programme minimises transfusion reactions by
-
careful forward & reverse grouping, using adequate controls.
-
performing cross-matching using techniques, which are sensitive and designed to detect most clinically relevant antibodies.
-
following up on all discrepancies.
Our quality programme maximises medical utility by
-
converting all donated blood into its constituent components and thereby...
-
ensuring that each patient receives only the required component.
-
optimising and standardizing component yield so as to give reliable results.
-
providing consultation service regarding transfusion related problems and advocating rational blood use.
-
making special blood components available for patients with special needs e.g. washed RBCs, leukodepleted cellular products and volume reduced, components for paediatric applications.
-
Total quality management to ensure sterility, viability, quantity, safety and quality.
-
The basic standard achieved at present is that specified in the AABB "Standards" 17th edition.
How are donors screened?
At Jeevan we are strict about donor eligibility, donor screening, and take great care in collecting blood under sterile conditions, testing the blood carefully and storing them under proper conditions.
To give blood, donors must be least 18 years old, weigh at least 45kgs and must be of good overall health. All donors are put through a physical check and health history examination.
Blood from potential donors is tested for ABO group (blood type) and Rh type (positive or negative). Screening tests also are performed to detect infections such as hepatitis virus B and C, HIV, Malaria, syphilis and Leptospira. To sort out true infections from false-positive tests, more specific tests, called confirmatory tests, are conducted.
Sometimes potential donors could be temporarily disqualified, such as in the case of people with anaemia, which is usually reversible with treatment. Such donors who are temporarily disqualified are treated as "deferred donors". Whether a person is deferred temporarily or permanently depends on the reason for the disqualification.
Jeevan is taking great care to make blood safer today than it has ever been possible and as safe as modern science & medicine can make it. Donors cannot acquire any disease through donating blood because new, disposable, sterilized equipments are used for each donation. It is absolutely safe to receive blood transfusion from blood obtained via Jeevan blood bank. In fact, the risks of contracting a blood-borne disease through transfusion are far less than the risks of not receiving that transfusion at all.
Jeevan tests every unit of blood for Hepatitis B(HBsAg and Anti HBc), Hepatitis C (Anti HCV ), HIV 1 & 2 (HIV Antigen & Antibodies), and Leptospira (IgM antibody) by ELISA, Malaria by Chromatography and Syphilis. The tests far exceed national recommendations to enhance blood safety.
